My favorite thing about Jaakko Eino Kalevi is that he used to be a tram driver in Helsinki. My second favorite is that he left trams behind and moved to Berlin to orchestrate the kind of gorgeous and lush music found on his self-titled debut album Jaakko Eino Kalevi. Kalevi fiddled around for several years trying to find his sound, and now that he’s discovered his true niche is skeletal dream pop, this album functions as something of a debut. We announced the album back in March, premiering the lead single “Double Talk,” which remains my favorite. It’s all moony soft-pop, but supported by an underlying wiry bass groove. Many of his songs trade in very soft textures propped up by that undeniable bass line, at least both his other singles”Hush Down” and “Deeper Shadows” support this theory. Get lost in the whole album below.
