R.I.P. Natalie Cole
Natalie Cole has died at age 65. TMZ reports that the singer died yesterday at a Los Angeles hospital from congestive heart failure and complications from a kidney transplant and Hepatitis C. The legendary singer’s family shared a statement:
It is with heavy hearts that we bring to you all the news of our Mother and sister’s passing. Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived..with dignity, strength and honor. Our beloved Mother and sister will be greatly missed and remain UNFORGETTABLE in our hearts forever.
Cole, the daughter of jazz singer Nat King Cole, scored a number of big R&B hits in the ’70s, most notably “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love).” A battle with substance abuse sidelined her career in the early ’80s, but she returned to prominence with the 1987 album Everlasting and a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Pink Cadillac.” Her best-known work is 1991’s Unforgettable… With Love, on which she re-recorded old standards by her father, which sold 7 million copies in the US and won the Grammy for Album Of The Year. The album included what has become her best-known song, “Unforgettable,” a posthumous duet with her father. Cole also acted in the Cole Porter biopic De-Lovely, several TV movies, and episodes of series such as Grey’s Anatomy and Law & Order: SVU. She is survived by one son, Robert Adam “Robbie” Yancy.
