Freddie Gibbs – “Money, Cash, Hoes”
It seems Freddie Gibbs is revisiting rap eras past on his latest string of one-offs to draw folks back to Shadow Of A Doubt. He kicked off 2016 with the “Dead Presidents Freestyle” referencing Jay Z’s ’96 classic from Reasonable Doubt and revisited the Cash Money-dominated late’90s and early 2000s with the slight ode “Hot Boy.” He then brought things to the very near future, flowing over Madlib’s “No More Parties In LA” beat for his rendition “Cocaine Parties In LA” which has since been taken down.
Today, Gangsta Gibbs takes it back again with “Money, Cash, Hoes,” which is somewhat of an updated tribute to the Roc-A-Fella/Ruff Ryders collab on Jay Z’s 1998 album Vol. 2…Hard Knock Life. The only elements left from the original are a faint DMX “what” ad-lib and the hook — other than that it’s all Gibbs. He spits a couple gritty verses about, well, money, cash, and hoes over a murky, piano-driven trap beat. The subject matter may be trite, but Gibbs is plenty vivid and inventive enough to keep it exciting. Listen below.
