Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino Explains Why Chris Brown’s Latest Hit Perpetuates Rape Culture
At this point, there’s pretty much no question that Chris Brown is a garbage human being. Everyone knows it. Australia knows it so well they literally won’t let him into their country. The music industry knows it too, but hey, he’s a successful star and he makes people money, so they just kind of keep him around and let his garbage essence ooze out into the world. And Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast isn’t happy about it!
Chris Brown’s latest hit “Back To Sleep” — which contains such lovely flights of lyricism as “Baby when I wake you up/ Just let me rock, fuck you back to sleep girl/ Don’t say a word no (no, don’t you talk)” and “Ain’t sorry that I woke ya, I ain’t sorry ’bout ya job, fuck you back to sleep girl/Call sick in the morning so I can get a little bit more of your love/ I know you want me, how you feel me cause you never disagree” — has spent the past 17 weeks sitting not-so-pretty on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. And today, Cosentino went on Twitter to call out the song, its creator, and the entire music industry for perpetuating rape culture. Read her thoughts below.
Going on a rant…get ready…

"just let me rock, fuck you back to sleep girl, don't say a word no, girl don't you talk" are lyrics to the chorus of a VERY popular song

You already know how I feel about Chris Brown – but WHY/HOW are those lyrics ok? Cool, a song that perpetuates rape culture being a hit.

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 x infinity at that trash/anyone who thinks its OK to sing about fucking a girl back to sleep + telling her to not say a word
— Best Coast (@BestCoast) April 17, 2016
This isn't just about that idiot tho- the fact that's a song in popular culture that some A&R person was like "this is great" saddens me
— Best Coast (@BestCoast) April 17, 2016
.@billboard's review of that song "excels as a quality addition to his catalog’s stellar collection of panty-dropping and baby-making songs"
— Best Coast (@BestCoast) April 17, 2016
How about this for a review: singing about fucking a girl back to sleep/telling her dont say a word is singing about rape + it's disgusting
— Best Coast (@BestCoast) April 17, 2016
Last thing then I'm out- it's an issue even if someone else was singing those lyrics. Rape culture is everywhere + it's a BIG problem.
