Diet Cig – “Tummy Ache” Video
Glitter, snacks, and rock ‘n’ roll: the hallmarks of Diet Cig’s video for recent single “Tummy Ache.” The clip stars a cast of young female musicians who are just trying to get to the gig, albeit with some fun detours along the way. In real life, the girls are members of the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls and Girls Rock Philly, two non-profit music and mentoring organizations that aim to empower young women. The program has participants form bands, learn instruments and create songs all in a matter of a few weeks, and the music video for “Tummy Ache” encapsulates that on a larger scale, showing the girls as they ride around in a van and prep for their upcoming show.
Pitstops for junk food and impromptu dance parties while crafting add a lighthearted element to a song that otherwise deals with a heavier theme of being a woman in a male dominated scene and the necessity of inclusion. The song begins with contrasting sounds and images: Vocalist and guitarist Alex Luciano sings, “Starting to get real sick of trying to find my voice/ Surrounded by all boys,” as we watch the girls blissfully go about their day. In a way, the music video acts as a look into a more equal reality while the song serves to highlight these ongoing issues.
When the girls finally get to the show, they proudly hang up the fruits of their felt and hot glue labor: signs and pennants showing support for Planned Parenthood, immigrants and Black Lives Matter, among others, and then launch into a set full of crowdsurfing and all. If you’ve got a keen eye you’ll also catch a quick cameo by PWR BTTM’s Ben Hopkins and Liv Bruce in the video’s final scenes. Cooler yet, the band is having Girls Rock camp bands open several of their upcoming tour dates to raise money for their organizations.
