Later this week, the great Southern rock singer and songwriter Jason Isbell, who has come a long way since he was in the Drive-By Truckers, will release his new album The Nashville Sound. It’s his follow-up to 2015’s great Something More Than Free and the first since 2011 that gives billing to the 400 Unit, his crack backing band. Isbell and the 400 Unit recorded the album in RCA Studio A, a historic Nashville country studio, with Sturgill Simpson/Chris Stapleton producer Dave Cobb, who also did Isbell’s Southeastern and Something More Than Free, behind the boards. The LP has some of Isbell’s best, most outward-looking lyrics, and we’ve already posted a bunch of its songs: “Hope The High Road,” “Cumberland Gap,” “If We Were Vampires,” “White Man’s World.” And right now, you can stream the whole thing at NPR.
