Eminem Lists The Greatest Rappers Of All Time

It’s always interesting when rappers make their “best rappers of all time” lists. Musical taste is a subjective thing, so these lists can’t be wrong. There’s always a set of stock answers to the question — Biggie, Tupac, Jay-Z, Eminem — and the lists get more interesting when they get further away from those stock answers. And when the person in question is one of the rappers on those stock lists, it gets more interesting still. That’s why it’s worth looking into the list that Eminem just reeled off on Twitter.

In response to a random Twitter question about the greatest rapper of all time this past weekend, Eminem reeled off his list of 17 names yesterday. Em’s list includes a few of the standard gen-X favorites: 2Pac, Jay-Z, Biggie, LL Cool J, Rakim. It includes a couple of of underrated gen-X figures, too: Kool G Rap, Naughty By Nature’s Treach.

Em’s list includes some of the younger rappers that lots of people mention, like Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole. (It also includes Nas, Lil Wayne, and André 3000, established legends who are all technically younger than Em himself.) The list includes a few of Em’s frequent collaborators: Royce Da 5’9″, Crooked I. It includes Redman twice. It also includes Joyner Lucas?

This is an off-the-dome list. We shouldn’t take it too seriously. Em probably doesn’t mean to imply that he thinks Redman is twice as good as any other rapper; he just wanted to make sure that Redman was in there. Final tally: 10 rappers older than Eminem, seven younger than him. (We’re counting Biggie and Pac as being older than Em, since they were born before him, even though he’s outlived both of them by a lot. Also, if we count Redman twice, it’s 11 rappers older than Em.)

Notable exclusions: 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, KRS-One, Big L, Snoop Dogg, Scarface, Big Pun, Slick Rick, Chuck D, Q-Tip, any Wu-Tang members, any white people, any women.
