The Cork, Ireland indie rockers Cardinals are getting close to release day for their debut album Masquerade. Today they bring us some brief US tour dates and one more single to go along with "Barbed Wire," "The Burning Of Cork," "Big Empty Heart," and the title track. This one is called "I Like You." It's a smoldering folk-rock track buoyed by accordion, and it builds to explosive high points without losing its singer-songwriter-y essence.
Frontman Euan Manning shared this context:
["I Like You"] is the first song we wrote with the album in mind. After a very long period of not working on anything, we started and finished this some bright morning last February in our practice studio. It felt cathartic, a completely grounding moment after feeling slightly lost for months.
The first lyric is stripped/paraphrased from the tune "My Funny Valentine." I don't think it was written by Chet Baker but that's the version we know.
