Buck Meek – “Can I Mend It?”

Daniel Arnold

Did you ever get so mad that you punched a wall hard enough to do serious damage to your fist and/or the wall? I have. It's the worst. In the seconds after that, you come down to earth real quick. You're still mad about the thing that you were mad about, but your situation is so much worse now. You've freaked out everyone around you, your hand is all fucked up now, and you also have to figure out the steps you'll need to take to fix this big, ugly new hole in the wall. Can't just be like "I'll hang a picture over that." You need to look at YouTube tutorials about spackle. Nice going, stupid.

Big Thief guitarist Buck Meek sings about punching a wall on the opening line of his new solo song "Can I Mend It?," and he sounds so chill about it. The song is all about fixing broken trust and worrying that your own fucked up shit will affect your relationship: "Can I mend it? Can I make it whole?/ Now that you’ve seen into the dark side of my soul." But the song is folky and inviting enough that the message comes through in the most reassuring ways. (Meek does not get into the subject of repairing literal physical wall holes, which is much less emotionally fraught.)

Meek's new solo album The Mirror is out Friday. His Big Thief bandmates helped out on the LP, with drummer James Krivchenia producing and Adrianne Lenker singing backup throughout. We've already posted the singles "Gasoline" and the non-Johnny Cash cover "Ring Of Fire," and now you can hear "Can I Mend It?" and check out Meek's upcoming tour dates below.

The Mirror is out 2/27 on 4AD. In other news, my daughter has been watching Jeopardy! with me lately, and she keeps saying that Ken Jennings reminds her of Fix-It Felix from Wreck-It Ralph. That doesn't really have anything to do with Buck Meek, but the song title made me think of it. Thanks for your attention to this matter.
