Joyce Manor Postpone Shows Due To Barry Johnson’s Torn Vocal Cord

Dan Monick

Joyce Manor released their fantastic new album I Used To Go To This Bar in January, and they're out on the road supporting it right now. The Torrance trio will be pushing back their next two shows, though, due to a vocal cord tear for frontman Barry Johnson. Last night the band postponed their show at Toronto's Danforth Music Hall, and tonight they won't be appearing as scheduled at Detroit's Majestic Theatre. Those shows have been rescheduled for April 23 (Detroit) and April 24 (Toronto) at the start of the next leg of the tour. Johnson hopes to be ready to perform again by Saturday's show at the Salt Shed in Chicago, the last show of the current stretch.

Here's Johnson's Instagram message about it:

I woke up super sick before our new york show so we had a doctor come out and give me a steroid shot to reduce the swelling in my vocal chords. this did the trick mostly and i was able to make it through the new york show but my voice felt pretty rough. woke up the next day in buffalo and couldn’t even talk. spent all day steaming my voice and trying to get it to come back because i didn’t want to cancel the show. my bandmates and tour manager all suggest we cancel but i was stubborn about it and thought i could just hack some shit up and pull it off. i couldn’t and my voice was totally fucked up for the show. sounded awful, felt even worse. we haven’t played a headline show in Toronto since 2022 and it was really hard to make the choice to postpone but my voice was totally shot. I went to a doctor yesterday and they confirmed i have a tear on my vocal chord. they said it’s not a super big deal and gave me a steroid and put me on vocal rest for the next few days. They said that if i sing before it’s healed the tear will worsen and lead to scarring which is permanent (think Liam Gallagher now vs the 90s) I’m really sad that we have to postpone toronto and detroit but I don’t wanna fuck my shit up permanently. I appreciate everyone’s understanding. I have felt like i’m living in a stress dream letting the other bands and all our fans down the last two nights. I love you guys and hope to be singing by the chicago show ???

Joyce Manor have a whole lot of tour dates this year, so hopefully Johnson heals as quickly as expected.
