Geese are everywhere these days, including the pitcher's mound at Citi Field, where the Mets have been getting killed lately. Collectively, the band stepped up alongside Mr. Met to deliver the first pitch Sunday at the Mets' game against the Colorado Rockies. Bassist Dom DiGesu, a southpaw, was the one who actually made the toss, sending it squarely across home plate to the delight of his bandmates, all of whom joined him in wearing Nike MLB Limited City Connect Jerseys. On IG Stories, Geese wrote, "Absolutely honored," and DiGesu wrote, "Best day ever."
Geese have a longstanding relationship with Mt. Met, who was backstage at the Brooklyn-reared Band To Watch's most recent hometown show at the Brooklyn Paramount last fall, and the band conducted an interview at a Mets game last summer. But in particular DiGesu, who wore a Mets shirt to Geese's Tiny Desk concert, has been a hardcore Mets supporter since childhood. Before taking the mound Sunday, he shared some childhood photos of him in Mets attire with All Things Considered and discussed his lifelong fandom:
I grew up going to the games a lot with my family. My parents are both lifelong Mets fans as well. My parents would let me cut class to go to opening day. I was at Game 3 [of the] 2015 World Series with my mother. We got to see David Wright's home run.
He says his fandom has been an influence on the whole band and that they listen to audio of Mets games in the van on tour:
Yeah, we do. We'll throw on SNY on the laptop or something in the van on tour. But [my bandmates] are casual fans, I would say. I got them into it after watching the games on tour. We're all sitting next to each other so they have no choice but to hear it. Our drummer, Max, is a very big basketball fan, so he got me back into basketball. And I got him into baseball.
DiGesu said he practiced a bit to prepare for Sunday's big pitch: "A little bit. I had to get the rust off."
