On Friday, LA-based songwriter Jordan Patterson will release her new EP Songs From A Valley Girl. It's the follow-up to her debut album The Hermit, which came out last fall, but it will be her first release for Secretly Canadian. Today, she's shared a new single "Cinderella," which was produced with Dijon-collaborating duo Mulherin.
I love Patterson's work, not only because she has an elastically unique voice, but she uses those emotional vocal swings to sound as if she's working through complicated emotions in real time. On "Cinderella," it seems like there's a lot changing, but is it all for the better? Is it real? "Did I lose a good thing? Or was that good thing me?" she asks at the song's opening. "Am I feeling worse? Or am I feeling new?" Patterson never settles on an answer, but she makes the gray area feel okay, even if its unfamiliar. "I said I’m feeling strange today/But I think I like it," she sings later.
Listen to "Cinderella" below and also watch a live video recorded on the back of a truck with producer Marshall Mulherin.
Songs From A Valley Girl is out 6/19 via Secretly Canadian.
