Carly Rae Jepsen is making moves right now. Earlier this week, we got the confirmation that she's working with Lena Dunham on a new stage-musical adaptation of 10 Things I Hate About You, set to open on Broadway next year. At the same time, we're about a month away from the release of Jepsen's new double album Day And Night. It's shaping up beautifully.
I'm sure we all have opinions about album rollouts where artists release nonstop advance singles, so you already feel like you already heard the whole thing when the record finally comes out. But when that record has 24 songs, you can afford to drop a bunch of advance singles without compromising the release-date impact, especially when those advance singles are bangers. Thus far, Jepsen has shared the songs "On Wires," "After All," and "Don't Leave Me On The Dance Floor." Today, she's got a new one.
Jepsen's new single "Motivation," which comes from the Night half of her album, is not a Kelly Rowland/Lil Wayne cover. Instead, it's a bright, euphoric club-pop bounce. The song has a determined strut, but it still shows the warmth that Jepsen brings to everything. She co-wrote the song with Cole MGN, and Cole co-produced it with regular Jepsen collaborator Kyle Shearer. Here's what Jepsen says about the song:
"Motivation" started when I was back in my hometown in the fall, and the crunch of the leaves under my feet started creating this rhythm. I was thinking about my family and how passionate we all are, how we have such high expectations of each other. "Motivation" became my way of making peace with all of that — it’s our little family anthem that recognizes all the complicated parts, but I hope it can be an anthem for chosen families as well.
Director Caio Viera shot the "Motivation" video in Paris, and it stars Gigi Goode, the fashion designer, actoress, model and former RuPaul's Drag Race contestant. It might give you that classic "damn, I should be in Paris right now" feeling. At the end of the video, you get to see a quick glimpse of Jepsen's brand new baby, born earlier this year. A cutie! Check it out below.
Day And Night is out 9/18 on Interscope.
