If you caught Dazy's opening set on Militarie Gun's recent tour, then you probably got a good look at Andrew Madore, the guy who plays guitar for James Goodson on tour. He's hard to miss. I met Madore at the Charlottesville show on that tour a couple of weeks ago. Nice guy. Really tall — like 6'7" — but not quite as tall as me. Whenever I meet someone just a tiny bit shorter than me, I feel like I'm fucking their whole day up. When you think of yourself as "the tall guy" and you meet someone even taller, it scrambles your brain a little bit. This doesn't happen to me very often, but it's always a real headfuck.
Anyway. I was saying. Andrew Madore makes his own fuzzy, delirious indie pop under the name Perfect 100. Last year, he released a self-titled EP and played Stereogum's Weird Fucks show. Today, he releases the new single "Around My Finger," a euphoric blast of slacker melody with serious '90s Sebadoh energy. Madore recorded most of it at home in his Brooklyn apartment, with Restraining Order's Will Hirst on the drums. In a press release, Madore says:
I wrote this song in a moment where I was paralyzed with the anxiety of losing time and couldn’t really get anything done. I couldn’t respond to my friends, I couldn’t leave the house, I couldn’t think about my life without being hyper-aware of all the wasted time leading up to that moment. I just thought if I could pause time, if I could have it wrap around my finger and hold it in my hand, so many of my fears and anxieties would go away and I could work out my life.
Alexa Terfloth directed the video, which has the same immediate, lo-res energy as the song. Check it out below.
"Around My Finger" is out now on bloody knuckles. Perfect 100 will play New York's Alphaville 11/12.
