We are just a little more than a month away from the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, which promises to be the fall's defining cultural event. The new game's blockbuster reach extends in all directions, including music. There's going to be a 34-song soundtrack album with contributions from a baffling array of big stars, and we've already heard a deep selection of its tracks. GTA VI will have more big stars hosting its in-game radio stations. And the game will have a score from French blog-house titans Justice, whose trashy-thrills retro sensibility seems perfect for Vice City shenanigans.
Today, Rockstar Games unveils its GTA VI launch trailer and unveils Justice as the composers of the game's score. Those two things are related to each other because the trailer is scored by a brand-new Justice track with a bunch of superstar collaborators. On "Flower In A Hurricane," Justice team up with Tame Impala, SZA, and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard — a whole lot of people for one song.
The track itself is an '80s-style synth-rock anthem with a dramatic opening-riff moment that reminds me of Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing." Justice previously teamed up with Tame Impala for "One Night/All Night" and the Grammy-winning "Neverender," from their last album, 2024's Hyperdrama. A decade ago, Tame Impala's Kevin Parker and SZA also worked on some tracks with Mark Ronson, but they were never released.
For most of "Flower In A Hurricane," Parker and SZA sing together in harmony. It's not clear what Parker's fellow Australian psych wizards in King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard did to the track, but I'm sure some of the triumphant organ and guitar action comes from them. As for the trailer, it just looks fucking awesome. I am about to waste so much of my life on this game. I'm not saying that for any kind of advertising purpose. I'm just saying they got me.
Other excerpts from Justice's GTA VI score apparently already appeared in Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a half-hour game preview that you can watch on Netflix. There may or may not be some kind of game-score release, but "Flower In A Hurricane" will be one of the 34 tracks on GTA VI: The Album. Below, check out that song and the new trailer.
Grand Theft Auto VI and its accompanying album are both out 11/19.
