The number of Crate songs is about to expand dramatically. The Brooklyn shoegaze band made a big impact with their 2024 debut single "Julia," which landed on our list of that year's best shoegaze songs. But then Crate took a year to release their next single "Necklace," and then another year and a half after that to finally announce their debut album. But now it's coming, and the Crate catalog grows by one more song today.
Crate's self-titled debut finally arrives next week. It includes "Julia," "Necklace," and "Not My Song (Mine To Keep)," the single that the band shared when they announced the LP. The record also features "Crushed To Nothing," the elegantly trippy fuzz-pedal masher that ends the album. In a press release, band member Ezra Engler says:
This one’s tricky because there’s multiple themes in this song. The main sentiment is about caring deeply about someone who is in a bad position. You do whatever you can to help them out, but you realize at the end of the day the only person that can help them is themselves. I’ve been on both sides of this coin, the helper and the helpee. This song definitely feels the most personal to me. I often write lyrics quickly and haphazardly — just kind of what I'm feeling in the moment. Then I read the lyrics back and I'm like, "Whoa, I was actually talking about something here." The outro spoken-word section switches to the thought of looking back on the past and reminiscing on things you could have done differently. Hindsight is 20/20 kinda vibe.
