We're getting awfully close to the release of Somersaults, the heavily anticipated new LP from British slowcore greats deathcrash. The South London combo teased their album with last fall's "Triumph" and announced it with January's title track, which we freakin' loved. There's one last advance single out today.
"NYC," for better or worse, is not an Interpol cover. I would like to hear deathcrash singer-guitarist Tiernan Banks bellow "The subway, she is a porno," but no. This one's a different sort of alt-rock power ballad — a rumbling, fuzzed-out five-minute tidal wave that gets endless mileage out of its four-chord progression. "I won't make the morning, but I'll be California myself," Banks sings on the refrain. He explains:
We used to joke that our third album would be called California Tonight. I spent weeks failing to convince the others that this really was a beautiful image that encapsulated everything we wanted to say with our music. I wrote the song to prove that point, though California Tonight became more about New York in the end.

Somersaults is out 2/27 on untitled (recs).
