big long sun are a Brighton-based eight-piece — Mina-Mae Alexander, Jamie Broughton, Ocean Goucher, Zofia Szymanowska, Oliver Parkes, Tom Gregory, Malte Henning, and Robert Smyth — that make "sonic bedroom art rock pop noises ... for dreaming." That last bit is real important to their loose-limbed folk oeuvre. Their latest single "call it a voice" drifts in a boisterous liminal space. It's spooky and sort of glorious, bringing to mind of Montreal, the Kinks, T. Rex, maybe even a little Donovan (in essence). There's some dark and psychedelic shit going on here. It's great.
A follow-up to last fall's also very good single "my stars aligning," "call it a voice" announces the group's third full-length love songs and spiritual recollections, which is out April 22. The band's Jamie Broughton revealed more about the new single saying: “A dark, paranoid folk anthem for the spiritually insecure mind. The lyrics explore the different shades of madness that accompany solitude. Whereas ‘my stars aligning’ presents a joyful and ecstatic aspect of the big long vision, ‘call it voice’ is cold and insular. A calculated mania in B minor, with major notes of melancholy."
Their press release also included their "manifesto" which speaks for itself:
